Fuel, toll, driver allowance and the expressway — a plain breakdown of what a Pune–Mumbai cab should cost you, and when a one-way booking makes more sense than a round trip.
The Pune–Mumbai run is the most-booked cab route in Maharashtra, and also the one where travellers are most often surprised by the final bill. Here is what actually goes into the fare.
The three components
Distance charge. The expressway route is roughly 150 km from Pune station to south Mumbai, a little less to the airport. At a sedan rate this is the bulk of your fare.
Toll. The Mumbai–Pune Expressway has a fixed toll for cars, plus the entry toll into Mumbai. These are charged at actuals and the receipts should be shown to you.
Driver allowance. A day trip carries a single day's bhatta. If the driver has to stay overnight, a night halt charge is added.
One way or round trip?
If you are not returning the same day, always ask for a one-way rate. On this corridor there is almost always a passenger waiting for the return leg, which means you should not be paying for an empty car to drive back.
Timing matters more than you think
Leaving Pune between 7 am and 10 am on a Monday, or Mumbai between 5 pm and 9 pm on a Friday, can add ninety minutes to the same journey. If your schedule is flexible, shift by an hour and the drive becomes noticeably easier.
