The right vehicle is decided by luggage and road type, not just by head count.
Nearly every booking conversation starts with "how many people". That is the wrong first question. Luggage and terrain decide comfort far more than seat count.
Sedan — up to 4 passengers, 2 bags
Perfect for a couple or a small family on a highway route. It becomes uncomfortable the moment you add a third suitcase or a hill climb with four adults on board.
Ertiga or Innova — up to 6 passengers, 3–4 bags
The Ertiga is lighter and more economical; the Innova has the ground clearance and the engine for ghat sections. For Mahabaleshwar, Matheran approach roads or Konkan village roads, take the Innova.
Tempo Traveller — 12 to 16 passengers
Once you cross seven or eight people, splitting into two cars costs more and separates the group. A 13-seater with a roof carrier is almost always cheaper per head and far less stressful to coordinate.
A simple rule
Count your bags, then count your people, then check whether the last 30 km of your route is a ghat. If any two of those are on the higher side, size up one category.
