The ghats are at their most beautiful and least forgiving between June and September.
Monsoon travel in the Western Ghats is genuinely spectacular. It also demands respect from anyone behind the wheel.
1. Start early
Visibility drops sharply after 4 pm in heavy rain, and ghat roads get noticeably harder to read in the dark.
2. Check the weather in the destination, not just where you start
Pune can be dry while Malshej is under a landslide warning.
3. Keep a full tank before the ghat
Fuel stations thin out on ghat sections, and queues form when roads are diverted.
4. Do not stop at waterfalls on blind curves
The most photographed spots on Malshej, Tamhini and Amboli are also where most accidents happen.
5. Ask about tyre condition
It is a fair question to ask any operator before a monsoon hill trip. We check tread depth on every vehicle going into the ghats.
6. Build in extra time
A drive that takes three hours in December can take four and a half in July. Plan for it instead of rushing.
