Where to go on the Konkan coast when the well-known beaches are crowded.
Ganpatipule and Alibaug are wonderful and, on a long weekend, extremely full. The Konkan coastline runs for over seven hundred kilometres, and much of it stays empty.
Velneshwar
A curved, suru-lined beach near Guhagar with safe swimming and almost no commercial development.
Kelshi
North of Dapoli, with a long stretch of sand, a Mahalaxmi temple and one of the largest sand dunes on the coast.
Anjarle
Reached over the Jog river bridge, known for its hilltop Kadyavarcha Ganpati temple and turtle nesting season.
Aare-Ware
Twin beaches on the Ratnagiri–Ganpatipule road with a viewpoint that most travellers drive straight past.
Tarkarli and Devbagh
Further south in Sindhudurg, with the clearest water in Maharashtra and the state's only real snorkelling.
All five are best reached by road — public transport to these villages is sparse and infrequent.
